find an agency or clinic
In order to be selected as a surrogate, you need
a couple to select you. The best way to be selected is to register
with an agency or clinic. I would recommend trying out the agencies
first. Agencies usually pay better than the clinics. I would also
recommend using as many agencies as possible. This would increase
your chances of being seen by a couple who are interested in working
with you. Visit the links page to see national agencies that I have
worked with in the past who have paid above average surrogate fees
and recruit surrogates all over the country.
Find an
Attorney and negotiate your agreement
Many people wonder if they really need an
attorney to negotiate their contract. It is important to have an
experienced attorney negotiate your rights and make sure your
concerns are addressed. I have heard horror stories from surrogates
who did not have an attorney or whose attorney was incompetent or a
referred by the parents’ attorney. Many of these surrogates went
through the pain and suffering of the procedure only to find out
that they were not compensated as promised. Others did not have
their agreement structured to be tax-free. Now they are seeing 1/3
of their fee go to the government. This is why it is very important
to deal with an experienced attorney who is protecting your
interests. It is your right to select your own attorney. I
specialize in negotiating agreements on behalf of donors and
surrogates. I would be happy to represent you. The parents usually
pay my fees as part of the surrogacy agreement.
Absolutely do not begin any injections until you
have a signed agreement. Until all parties sign the agreement, all
bets are off. Anyone can back out. Or the final agreement may not be
what you thought it was going to be when you started the medication
and now it is too late.
Be a
Surrogate
Once you have a signed agreement (negotiated by
an attorney), you will begin the injections and the surrogacy
process. For more about the medical process, visit our links page.
Collect
Compensation
After you have completed the surrogacy process,
you should expect the check for the surrogacy fee. If your agreement
was properly worded, you should not have to pay any tax on the fee.
If it was not, you should set aside 1/3 of that fee for taxes.
